Yurts for sale | Nomadnessyurts's Blog

Yurts for sale - grab a bargain if you are in the UK

Handmade 16ft(4.8m) Yurt.

Constructed from the finest seasoned hardwood and covered in heavy duty canvas. Unique, unrivalled quality product.

Hello and welcome to this auction for a unique yurt that was made in our workshop in Farnham around six months ago. It is not brand new but is offered in very good condition.
This yurt is our ex-demo yurt. It is a truly remarkable structure constructed of Ash hardwood and locally sourced coppice hazel roof rods. It is not to be confused with the Mongolian imports found on ebay.
The wall sections are fully treated, sawn, p
laned and oiled Ash lathes held together with rust proof stainless steel nuts and bolts (see the picture for how they fold down into neat sections and stack away when not in use). The door frame and crown are also both hardwood (Ash) and have been varnished using the highest grade international yacht varnish. The crown has to be seen to appreciate it’s beauty, it is not steam bent but made from hardwood sections resined, pegged, glued and screwed to give a solid center which provides the weight to keep the yurt round and tight (no risk of sagging).
The cover is sewn in 18oz rot proofed, waterproofed, fire retardent canvas. All seams are “french seams” and allow the water to be shed over the seam not into it. The thread used is a poly cotton rot proof high strength thread.

This sounds like a fantastic opportunity, be a shame to miss it. Click through and give them a buzz.

Yurt living - mould prevention

Yurts for sale - Mould is one of my main worries about yurt living but this article suggest some simple solutions.

Yurt Mold Fear Solutions

No doubt about it, the best mold prevention anywhere on anything is air flow and sunshine. Actually yurts have less mold issues than most conventional buildings. Yet it is a frequent question with legitimate fear of health issues that can derive from mold. So, Yurts of Hawaii addresses mold on the FAQ page.

The photos are compliments of Blue Ridge Yurts in Virginia that illustrate landscape and forest with the above mold-prevention guidelines.

Yurts for sale blog has some more information about mould and yurt living.

yurt living in alaska

yurt life in alaska

I am trying to find out how sustainable living in a yurt in Alaska would be. I also wonder how many people in Alaska actually live in a yurt year round there. My family and I have been planning our move to Alaska for a couple of years and our dream is to buy land and live in a yurt for the rest of our lives. Seeing how we are from the mid-west most people here think we are insane and it is hard to find out good advice.Any and all tips will be greatly appreciated... Also does anyone know any good yurt companies already located in Alaska? And is it hard to get land zoned for this particular use?

Excellent in depth discussion about whether it is actually practical to live in a yurt in Alaska. Conclusions seems to be a tentative (oops, excuse the pun!) "yes" but it's not very ecologically sound in such extreme temperatures.

Harvest at Jimmy's 'glamping' in a yurt

"It's all about the toilets, I'm afraid," said Dan Raine, who'd travelled from Manchester with his wife for the food and music event.

"I can't stand festival toilets, so the extra expense was purely for the loos."

"We've done festival camping in the past," said Leni Raine, who's married to Dan.

Dan and Leni Raine only had to bring sleeping bags for their yurt

Jimmy's Farm, which is at Wherstead near Ipswich, didn't have camping for its inaugural festival in 2009, so it's making its debut in 2010.

The boutique camping area is fenced off from the regular campers and has its own toilets and showers.

A couple of the advantages are that the accommodation is already set-up for you and there are locks on the yurt and cabin doors to minimise the risk of theft.

"We do have our own tent, but this is more of a holiday - taking it easy and enjoying a more chilled side of camping," said Leni.

"£600 doesn't seem to get you a lot. You really do just get your yurt for the weekend, but it's a pretty average price for festivals in this type of accommodation.

"The security's pretty good on festival sites, especially if you're in VIP or boutique camping.

"You feel you can leave something and it's secure.

"Now we're older, our idea of festivals has changed slightly. We prefer it if we have a good time but we're not woken up in the middle of the night by somebody falling on our tent."

So it is 'all about the toilets"! One of the best reasons for booking a yurt at the next festival you go to, clean loos and a shower block!

Buying a yurt - great advice for buyers

Yurts for sale we've all seen the tempting ebay ads but is it buyer beware? This article has some really great advice for anyone who is serious about buying a yurt.

What's the biggest mistake people make in buying a yurt? The wrong size? No. You can always add a second yurt if the first turns out to be too small. The wrong style? Not usually. Most of the fabric yurts, for example, are pretty similar to each other, and if you're buying new you usually get to choose your options and customize it to meet your personal needs.

Definitely worth reading this very carefully before you buy a yurt! I love the way he deals with the most common problems as explains how to avoid them.

The wrong kind of yurts

I made the yurt about 11 years ago as my first prototype.winds that day were between 120 and 160 KMPH If my insurance covers it i will rebuild asap but if not i am out 20G and it will take a while to build it up again. as for wind kits, that would not have been period but my problem was it was built as per khazak dimensions not mongol so the roof pitch was more for snow and not as much wind.. a lower pitch may have saved it??

EEK This is what happens when you choose the wrong kind of yurts for your conditions!

Just breathe: a great way to use yurts

Next time you are looking at Yurts for Sale just think what you could do with a yurt! I am always blown away by the different uses people find for their yurts. This one is hyper-cool.
NORTH COVENTRY — Barbara Kosciewicz's massage therapy business literally transports clients into a different world. The licensed massage therapist built a yurt, or circular domed Mongolian-style tent, to house her new business, Exhale Retreat.
"The structure is a traditional Mongolian hut. This is the Americanized version," Kosciewicz said of the unusual tent-like building accessed via a path through the woods behind her rural Evans Road home. Her yurt has a hardwood floor and walls of ecru-colored canvas stretched over a collapsible lattice framework. The entrance is accessed via a small wood deck, where massage clients can sit and relax pre- or post-massage.
Inside the surprisingly roomy structure is a massage table and not much else."

This yurt is being used as a massage/therapy consulting room. I think yurts make amazing spaces for this sort of therapeutic business.

Here's a great time lapse video of a yurt being put up just to show how easy it is:

Yurt Renting in Oregon State Parks

What is a yurt

  • August 23rd, 2009 8:39 pm

Skylight in Tumalo yurt photo copyright K Sweeney

A campground yurt is a tent with a wooden structure, locking door and skylight. They are similar to the yurts used by "nomads in the Steppes of Central Asia".  (See Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yurt for a full history.)  The yurts at the Oregon State Parks also have a bunk bed, a futon couch that folds down, a kitchen table with chairs, electricity and a small heater. Many of the Oregon State Parks have yurts and having a chance to peer inside before reserving one might give you a clue about whether or not you would like to make a reservation.  If you have spent many nights in a tent, being able to stretch out without a rock for a pillow or mid-ribcage backrest might be a delightful change. It's also nice not to wind up with everyone and their dogs in a pile on one side of the tent when you wake up in the morning.  (The ground looked flat when you got there, didn't it?!)  Ever wonder whether the midnight foray down to the water just outside your tent was made by a deer or a bear?  Well, in a yurt it doesn't really matter.  Deer, bear, whatever; at least they're not in your tent with you or bumping into your tent stakes.

Lots of reasons why yurt renting is better than putting up a tent. I don't mind sleeping on the ground. It's the bear that really clinches it for me!
Just a thought if glamourous camping is 'glamping' shouldn't yurt renting be 'yenting'?

Yurt living article

In a yurt, you’ll hear every raindrop, every breeze, every bird call and coyote howl. In high winds your yurt will rock and creak like a wooden sailing ship in a gale. Yet, while reacting strongly to every weather change, yurts handle weather brilliantly. I was inside one day when a 100-mph wind gust hit. The lattice wall swayed. My desk rolled backward, books tumbled from atop a filing cabinet. But when I checked for damage later, I found only that the drip-edge of the roof had harmlessly flipped up—something I could have avoided by using the built-in tiedown loops. The roof and walls have never leaked, even in the worst rainstorm. The roof has never bowed under snow. And I’ve had only minor, fixable problems with cold and moisture penetrating around the bottom. If you’re living in areas of truly extreme conditions, wind and snow reinforcing kits are available.

I guess it will be fine then. I was a bit worried about high winds!
